now that is a sandwich I'm starving go for it I'll make another one nice wait and has pickles on it just pulling out and I guess I could do that should idea earthquake it is a little bit like an earthquake I was just kidding you're right you know earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the earth caused by a shifting of the Earth's crust the Earth is one big rock with lots of layers just like this sandwich when I pulled the layer of pickles out the whole sandwich just like your surface shakes when I all those layers of meat do sort of look like the Earth's layers Earth's top outer crust aren't the cotton it's actually the continents rest on top of the continental plates and they used to be very close together but over thousands and thousands of years with Quake help separate them to where they are today wow I can't believe entire continent scan put the layers deep inside of the Earth's crust are super hot and always moving that stuff to keep it like that and one place it needs a way to vent that's where earthquakes come into play and if one layer moves they all must move sandwich right pretty much earthquakes work like this hot layers of rock deep inside the earth move causing the cooler layers toward the top to ship the ship these shaking movements are called seismic waves Windows waves reach the plate they keep traveling along the Earth's surface they're called surface waves that's what we feel during an earthquake wow I don't think I've ever felt an earthquake though do they happen here we don't live near any faults faults is a large crack in the Earth's surface where earthquakes usually happen there are tons of bugs in California that's why they have a lot of earthquakes depending upon the movement of the plates along the fall mountains or volcanoes can form there why is that happened well if the plates push together in trouble before mountains like the Elks in the Himalayas if the plates pull apart hot melted rock from beneath the surface called magma rises to fill the gaps between the play when it cools volcanoes are formed earthquakes are pretty intense they can be the shaking motion of an earthquake is actually called the intensity seismologists use something called a seismometer do the intensity of earthquake seismic waves seismologists are earthquake scientists yeah as mologist are scientist that study earthquakes replace seismometers all over the world the seismometers are ready and waiting to record its intensity all over the world are there really that many earthquakes but they're like $10,000 whichever you play she's like California Panda proof have tons of little earthquakes that can hardly be felt what are you cheer there are maybe 10 earthquakes around the world that have a magnitude of 7 or more on the Richter Scale now that's intense what's a Richter scale your scale measures magnitude the size of an earthquake by studying magnitude and intensity seismologist can calculate something called seismic moment the total amount of energy released by an earthquake or J it looks so good it's not my fault very funny were you even listening this whole time I was for real I'll prove it listened earthquakes occur on fault and happen when the layers inside the earth shift apologists are scientist who study earthquakes and measure the magnitude intensity and seismic moment earthquakes are really intense and a form of mountains and volcanoes and even help move the continents where they are now okay how's that precise McMullen nice let's see if you can do something else wants that make me another sandwich
